John Spell of Roger Bellow & The Drifting Troubadours is Charleston’s country music authority

John Spell, Roger Bellow, and Bob Sachs of the Drifting Troubadours (above) will perform their western swing at Prohibition on Sun. May 20 at 7 p.m. — no cover

In 1941, a traveling salesman changed John Spell’s life. The man, from Stars of Tomorrow Studio, was out recruiting new students. A week from his sixth birthday, Spell was awestruck with the guitar, thumb pick, and metal bar before him in his Charleston living room. His first lesson was free, and right then and there, Spell learned his first guitar tune, "Narrow My God to Thee." The frets were numbered to 17. "I hadn’t gotten into numbers yet, but it was fairly simple," he says. "And I thought, ‘Wow, I did that.’" Luckily his father agreed to let him take lessons, and a prodigy was born.

Spell stopped trying to read music and instea...

With landlords using the courts as de-facto bill collectors, North Charleston’s eviction rate is the highest in the country

In a digital drop of Knowlesian proportions, a team of researchers at Princeton University has released the most detailed portrait of American evictions thus far and has come to a stunning conclusion: North Charleston’s eviction rate more than tripled from 2015 to 2016, making it the highest eviction market in the country.

Beginning in 2017, the team at Eviction Lab — led by sociologist, professor, and author Matthew Desmond — pored over 83 million eviction records dating back to the year 2000. The data, released earlier this month, is mostly based on available court records, but it provides the most accurate glimpse into an insidious facet of the national and regional housing crisis.

North Charleston averaged a whopping 10 evictions a day in 2016.

Sixteen-and-a-half percent of renters in ...

Stephen Schwarzman, School District Change Terms on His $25 Million Gift

Blackstone Group LP CEO Stephen Schwarzman has dropped his stipulation that his high school be renamed after him as a condition for his $25 million gift, the largest known gift to an individual public school.

The condition, which wasn’t disclosed when Mr. Schwarzman announced his gift in February, ran into objections from the community in Abington, Pa., after the school board disclosed it last month. Plans for the gift include paying for a major renovation at Abington Senior High School in Abington, Pa., where Mr. Schwarzman graduated in 1965, and adding a new science and technology center.

An initial pledge agreement, approved last month by the school board, outlined stipulations for the deal...

SC truckers not facing wage issues that led to Calif. lawsuits, agency head says

Truckers move through the gates at the Port of Charleston’s Wando Welch Terminal in this file photo. While trucking firms are being sued in California for alleged wage violations, the head of South Carolina’s trucking association says labor relations in the Palmetto State are good. File

While California trucking firms are being sued for allegedly misclassifying workers and violating federal wage laws, the head of a South Carolina trade group that advocates for commercial drivers says the Palmetto State is largely free of such abuses.

“My perspective is that the situation here in South Carolina and Charleston is not nearly the same as what’s happening on the West Coast,” said Rick Todd, president of the South Carolina Trucking Association.

“The West Coast situation is more political than le...
